Do You Actually Need Electrolytes? (Most People Don't Know)
You've probably seen electrolyte drinks everywhere — at the gym, on race day, or in your coworker's water bottle. But do you actually need them?
The honest answer: it depends on what you're doing, how long you're doing it, and how much you're sweating.
What Are Electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals that help regulate fluid balance, muscle contractions, and nerve function. The ones most commonly lost through sweat are sodium, potassium, and magnesium.
When you sweat heavily, you're losing more than water. You're losing electrolytes, too.
When Water Isn't Enough
For everyday hydration, water is usually all you need. But after a long workout, a hot day, or an intense sports session, replacing fluids and electrolytes can help support proper hydration.
You may benefit from electrolytes if you:
- Drink an excessive amount of water
- Exercise for 45–60+ minutes
- Sweat heavily
- Work or train in the heat
- Participate in endurance or high-intensity sports
- Follow a low-carb or ketogenic diet
- Are replacing fluids after vomiting or diarrhea
In other words: the more you sweat, the more electrolytes you may need.
What Should You Look for?
Not all electrolyte mixes are created equal. Some are loaded with sugar, artificial flavors, and unnecessary ingredients. Others simply don't contain much sodium.
Look for a formula that replaces what you're actually losing — especially sodium — without a lot of extras.
At Saturated, we keep things simple. Our mixes use citrate forms of key minerals and real fruit flavors, with no artificial flavors or sweeteners. They're also soy-free, vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO.
If you want something light and refreshing, try our Lemon Lime or Orange.
The Bottom Line
If you're sitting at a desk and drinking water throughout the day, you probably don't need an electrolyte supplement.
But if you're working out, sweating, spending time in the heat, or replacing a lot of fluid, electrolytes can be a helpful part of staying hydrated.
You don't need to overthink it. Replace what you lose, keep the ingredients simple, and drink up. 💧
